QRB Associate Editor Receives Major Award

Congratulations to QRB Associate Editor Anurag Agrawal, who recently won the David Starr Jordan Prize for innovative contributions to the study of ecology, population, or organismal biology.  This international prize is awarded every three years to a scientist under 40 years of age.

Article Traces History of Darwinian Medicine

An article in this month’s issue of The Quarterly Review of Biology explains why early attempts to study disease from an evolutionary perspective failed, and how modern Darwinian medicine differs from its antecedent.

Why solitary reptiles lay eggs in communal nests

Reptiles are not known to be the most social of creatures. But when it comes to laying eggs, female reptiles can be remarkably communal, often laying their eggs in the nests of other females. New research in the September issue of The Quarterly Review of Biology suggests that this curiously out-of-character behavior is far more common in reptiles than was previously thought.

Article Reviews Evidence for Epigenetic Inheritance in Wide Range of Species

Increasingly, biologists are finding that non-genetic variation acquired during the life of an organism can sometimes be passed on to offspring—a phenomenon known as epigenetic inheritance. An article to be published this week in The Quarterly Review of Biology lists over 100 well-documented cases of epigenetic inheritance between generations of organisms, and suggests that non-DNA inheritance happens much more often than scientists previously thought.
