On the Quality of Evidence for Origin and Dispersal of Cultivated Plants
Sources of evidence for origin and dispersal of cultivated plants are tabulated and classified. All items are qualified, and the level of confidence with which an item of evidence can be accepted varies accordingly. Qualifications are listed as (1) authenticity, (2) abundance, (3) kind, (4) interpretation, and (5) integration. Theories proposed are often based on evidence of very dubious quality; it is suggested here that a more disciplined approach to available evidence would be desirable.
